If you're planning to rent out a house, then you need to make sure that your property and your tenants are protected. One of your primary responsibilities here is to make sure that your doors are as secure as possible to prevent break-ins. While you can make sure to install high-quality locks on your external doors, it might help to add security screen doors to the property as well. What do you need to think about first?

What Are the Benefits of Security Screen Doors?

Security screen doors give you both a visual and physical deterrent against people who may try to break into your property. Just having a lockable screen door in place may convince some burglars not to bother trying to get into your property; even if someone were to target your house, the screen door gives you an additional level of protection to prevent them from getting inside.

How's the Neighbourhood?

If your house is in a quiet neighbourhood that doesn't typically attract much crime, then a security screen door, while useful, may not be essential. If, however, your property is in a crime hot-spot area or has simply been targeted in the past, then it may be worth your while to have a security door installed.

Tip: If you don't know much about the neighbourhood yet, look at other properties in the street. If none of your neighbours have security screen doors, then it's probably a pretty safe place; if they all have doors, then you should think about getting them too.

Will It Make Your House Look Better to Renters?

Adding security screen doors may actually make your house look more attractive to some renters. As well as giving added protection against burglary, security screen doors allow your tenants to answer the front door without compromising their safety. Plus, if you use security doors with insect screens, then your tenants may be able to leave the house's main doors open to make the most of warmer weather without worrying about being plagued by insects.

Remember that not all security screen doors are the same. While any security door may look the part, some are stronger and more secure than others. If you're keen to get the most secure door possible, then look at products that come with the Australian Standard AS5039-2008 rating. This standard is only given to doors that meet stringent design and construction conditions.
